We’re excited to share an enthusiastic welcome to Michael Deering, who has recently joined the Library in the role of Circulation Supervisor. Michael will work directly with Curtis Matthew (Head of Circulation and Reserves), to help coordinate workflows for library circulation, reserves, and maintenance of the physical collections.
Michael Deering comes to the Mina Rees Library after two years of working at the Queens College Music Library, where he provided reference and circulation assistance to students, faculty, and community members. Having previously earned degrees in education and music, he is currently studying within the Graduate School of Library and Information Science at Queens College with the mission of creating diverse, accessible, and community driven cultural institutions. When not in the library or using his cooking skills in the kitchen, Michael continues to teach and perform music around the New York City area, as he has for much of the last decade (with a background in percussion and guitar).
In case you weren’t aware, the Mina Rees Library’s print collection includes about 230,000 books, with roughly 33,000 circulation and reserve transactions each year. The Circulation Desk is also a pick-up point for about 10,000 interlibrary loan items each year, and about 10,000 items from other CUNY libraries requested annually by users CUNY-wide. Michael Deering will be a key collaborator in developing workflows and policies relating to the Library’s collections, and we’re happy to have him on board.
