Many students have come in this semester with questions on citation management, specifically Zotero. As the semester continues, the questions become all the more specific, and the time passes before the perfect bibliography is attained. Below are some links to help you navigate the zotero website for troubleshooting, or things I quite possibly forgot to mention. If hands-on help is still needed, Drop-In Hours every Tuesday and Wednesday for the Spring semester will be held at inside the GC Library, room C196.05. Information is above and posted on the calendar.
- Title Capitalization and Zotero: it seems that best practice is to have titles in sentence case in Zotero this way they can easily be converted into Title case if needed. That means if a reference is imported as ALL CAPS or Title Case, you should edit this reference. http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/sentence_casing
- Citation Styles: Additional styles, if you wanted to explore can be found http://www.zotero.org/styles/
- Zotero file storage (Dropbox, WebDAV, Zotero): This link specifically refers to the mobile Zotero (an app called ZotPat) but spells out the pros/cons of all the various file storage options available http://zotpad.uservoice.com/knowledgebase/articles/103784-which-file-storage-solution-should-i-use-
- Zotero does offer 300 MB of free file storage, afterward you have to pay an annual fee, so be certain to check your storage under your Settings in your online account. Or , you can use the WebDAV service here at the Graduate Center, documentation on the citation Manager libguide under Zotero PDF Storage: http://libguides.gc.cuny.edu/citation
- Importing Metadata from PDF: Instead of from the Translator icon or from a RIS file import. Remember, Zotero can read the PDF via its digital object identifier or embedded DOI. More info on this can be found here: http://www.zotero.org/support/retrieve_pdf_metadata
- Zotero file retrieval: It was discovered if using multiple computers, a double-click will give you a message saying your file cannot be found. This is a file syncing issue. Here’s what Zotero says to amend this: http://www.zotero.org/support/kb/files_not_syncing
- Zotero documentation (includes basic instructions and video tutorials as well as a knowledge base full of useful tips): http://www.zotero.org/support/
- Zotero forums (where you go for help if documentation doesn’t suffice): http://forums.zotero.org/categories/
- Zotero video tutorials: http://www.zotero.org/support/screencast_tutorials
We hope to see you there, during the Drop-In!
Of course if you can’t make the Drop-In time, you are welcome to set up an appointment with a librarian HERE.
