Teaching with Open Educational Resources

Wednesday, March 2, 2016 @ 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm

Dear Members of the Graduate Center Community,

Please join the staff of the Teaching and Learning Center on Wednesday 3/2 at 1 pm in room C196.03 for a workshop exploring the use of open educational resources (OER) in the classroom. The rapid increase of textbook prices is a particular problem at a university like CUNY whose students typically come from lower income backgrounds and are already hard pressed to afford college. The use of educational materials that are free and open is an important intervention into this problematic dynamic. However, when exploring the world of OER, teachers new to the vast number of resources out there can be easily overwhelmed.

In this workshop, designed and led by the TLC’s Andy McKinney, we will discuss the value of using OER, showcase some repositories, and participate in a group activity that will model how to evaluate the quality and value of available OER. By the end, participants will be able to begin designing courses that are both more accessible to lower income students while also reinforcing the belief that knowledge should be free and open.

Please RSVP here.
