Join the New York Public Library and Community of Literary Magazines & Presses for a program to celebrate the publication of The Little Magazine in Contemporary America  (University of Chicago Press. 2015), an anthology of original essays by prominent little magazine editors.  The program, in the Dewitt Wallace Periodical Room, will feature  book editors Joanne Diaz and Ian Morris, and contributors Amy  Hoffman (Women’s Review of Books) and Keith Gessen (N + 1).

On exhibit will also be first issues of many of the magazines included in the book,  which  takes its inspiration from The Little Magazine; A History and Bibliography, published in 1946  and co-edited  by Carolyn Ulrich (1880-1969), Chief Librarian in the Periodicals Division at NYPL.

JOANNE DIAZ is associate professor of English at Illinois Wesleyan University. She was an assistant editor at TriQuarterly and is the author of two collections of poetry, The Lessons andMy Favorite Tyrants.

KEITH GESSEN is a founding editor of n+1. He is the author of All the Sad Young Literary Menand the editor or translator of Voices from Chernobyl; There Once Was a Woman Who Tried to Kill Her Neighbor’s Baby; Diary of a Very Bad Year: Confessions of an Anonymous Hedge Fund Manager; and It’s No Good: Poems, Essays, Manifestos.

AMY HOFFMAN is the author of the memoirs Lies about My Family (University of Massachusetts Press, 2013); An Army of Ex-Lovers: My Life at the Gay Community News(University of Massachusetts Press, 2007); and Hospital Time (Duke University Press, 1997). She is editor of Women’s Review of Books and teaches creative nonfiction in the Solstice MFA Program at Pine Manor College.

IAN MORRIS has taught courses on literature, writing, and publishing at Lake Forest College and Columbia College Chicago. He was managing editor of TriQuarterly magazine for thirteen years, is the founding editor of Fifth Star Press, managing editor of Punctuate, and the author of the novel When Bad Things Happen to Rich People.
