Welcome Back to Workshops!: August-September at Mina Rees Library

It’s a new semester, a new year, and a new opportunity for learning the ins and outs of library research. We’re running a series of workshops on the tools and techniques available to you in the library. Here’s what’s on offer during the first month of classes. (To register, click on the title of the event, or go to the events page.)

Intro to the GC Library

Jump-start your library research with pointers from the GC librarians. Learn how to use the library website; develop effective search queries; access electronic resources on or off campus; determine the best database for your research; find archival and primary sources; and learn the basics of citation management.

Tuesday 8/27, 4:30–6:00 pm
Friday 9/6, 2:30–4:00 pm
Wednesday 9/11, 2:30–4:00 pm

Zotero on Your Laptop

Learn how to use this excellent, open-source citation management software. We’ll teach you how to install Zotero on your laptop; sign up for a Zotero account; add citations to your account; and create a bibliography from your citation list. No experience needed!

Thursday 8/29, 6:30–8:00 pm
Wednesday 9/4, 1:00–2:30 pm
Tuesday 9/24, 6:30–8:00 pm

Additionally, a representative from IT will be in the Library Lounge to help troubleshoot IT needs, password issues, and log-in questions from Tuesday, August 27th, to Friday, September 6th, from 1pm to 5pm each weekday. Take advantage of this opportunity to clear up any problems you’re having.

More workshops will be coming soon! Keep your eye on this blog and on the library’s Twitter feed. Advanced Zotero Q&A sessions will begin in October in the Library Lounge, and there will be a slate of other offerings covering some if not all of the following: foundations and grants, archival research, MALS research, dissertation and thesis deposit, academic publishing, and more.
