Apply now! Open Knowledge Fellowship | Spring 2023

The Library seeks applications for the Spring 2023 cohort of the Open Knowledge  Fellowship, which provides a $2000 stipend for participating Graduate Center doctoral students. Apply by Wednesday 1/11/23 at 5pm EST! We look forward to hearing from you. Feel free to reach out with any questions: library@gc.cuny.edu

The Fellowship is interdisciplinary, and we welcome applications from students in all programs. This is a competitive opportunity made entirely possible through state funding provided by the CUNY Office of Library Services (OLS).

What will happen during the Open Knowledge Fellowship?

The Fellowship provides interactive, in-person training by Graduate Center library faculty on how to find and implement openly licensed resources for the course you teach (see Eligibility below).

Often referred to as Open Educational Resources (OER), these may include textbooks, lab manuals, ancillary materials, videos – even archival resources! We’ll discuss the variable landscape of Open Access (OA) scholarship, how to locate high-quality journal articles that are freely available online (and how to recognize a “rogue PDF” and other copyrighted works).

Most importantly, we’ll collectively deconstruct the scholarly landscape – so that you leave the Fellowship with a clear understanding of contemporary issues at the heart of “open,” on an international scale and within your field.

By the end of the Fellowship, you will have:

– Adapted the syllabus for your Fall 2023 course, so that it consists entirely of cost-free materials

– A critical and informed perspective about economic/political issues in scholarly publishing

–  A working knowledge of copyright, Creative Commons licenses, and Fair Use

– A set of strategies for inviting students into the creation of open resources, centering their perspectives in the process

Who is Eligible to Apply?

The Spring 2023 Fellowship is open to Graduate Center doctoral students who will be teaching at CUNY in Fall 2023. Participants must be fully enrolled in the Spring 2023 semester to receive the stipend. Full enrollment for doctoral students is 7 credits or weighed instructions units (WIUs).

Spring 2023 Fellowship Dates:

Fellows are required to participate in workshops on the following dates/times, held in person at The Graduate Center. These six dates are all Thursdays, 1pm-3pm:

Thursday January 19th

*If one of the above dates does not work for you, please apply and note this on your application.

Syllabus Conversion Project:

Fellows will create an OER / zero-cost syllabus to replace an existing syllabus for a course that will be taught in Fall 2023 – or – that was previously offered in a recent semester and is expected to be taught again.
