Basic Research, Online Edition:
Using the Library’s Virtual Resources

If you’ve been putting off learning how to access library e-resources remotely because, after all, you could just go into the library, now is the time to rectify that. Also, extra tools have become available from CUNY and from publishers, so there’s more to know than there was a little while ago. This workshop will help you get into the GC’s databases from home, find and access scholarly (and perhaps not-so-scholarly) resources, mount effective searches in databases and journals, and offer ways to save the material you find.

The Life-Changing Magic of Open Access:
Best Practices for Finding Others’ Research and Publicly Sharing Yours

In this workshop, we will help you understand the types of sites where open access works can be found, and demonstrate a variety of tools for quickly determining whether a specific item is available open access.

Further, we will introduce a range of options for making your own scholarly work open access, and offer some compelling reasons why you might want to. We’ll pay particular attention to CUNY Academic Works, CUNY’s open access repository, and review some steps you can take to boost your online scholarly profile and maximize the discoverability of the works you place online.

Dissertation + Thesis Deposit Info Session

Graduate Center students: are you planning to deposit your dissertation or thesis soon? The library’s Dissertation Office is holding evening information sessions that will cover:

• overview of the deposit procedure;
• document and file preparation;
• copyright issues;
• citation & plagiarism; and
• embargoes (access restrictions).

Sessions are designed to address common concerns of doctoral and masters students, with some time allotted for individual questions.
