Coronavirus Update from the Library

Along with the rest of the Graduate Center, the Mina Rees Library is preparing and planning for coronavirus-related disruptions. Plans are constantly evolving, but we want to share what we know at this point:

Things To Do ASAP: Make sure you can log into all library systems. Logging into your OneSearch/library catalog account requires your library barcode number (from the back of your GC ID card). Off-campus access to library databases and e-journals requires your GC network credentials (i.e., the same username/password you use for logging in to GC computers, printers, etc.). Logging into the ILL system also requires your GC network credentials. You can reset your network account password at IT’s self-service password reset site. The GC’s Teaching and Learning Center has created an Instructional Continuity site, which includes a list of other things to do ASAP.

Increased Book Renewals: To help students and others avoid unnecessary trips to campus, all CUNY libraries now allow at least 9 renewals of regular circulating books. (The Graduate Center already allowed unlimited renewals of its circulating books, and this will not change.) There will likely be other CUNY-wide updates to circulation policies announced in the coming days.

Interlibrary Loan: ILL is currently operating as usual. Remember that you can also request scans of journal articles and book chapters/sections that we physically own. If the GC shuts, we hope to be able to continue ILL for articles and book chapters/sections, but there are some technological challenges we need to resolve in order to make that possible. We will keep you posted.

Librarian Help Available 24/7: Library chat service continues to be available 24/7 via the library website. (Click “24/7 Chat” under Services.) You won’t always get a GC or CUNY librarian, but you will always reach a real, live, qualified librarian — and GC librarians follow up on chats afterwards as necessary.

Library Workshops: In the coming days, decisions will be made about canceling or virtualizing library workshops. Updates will be noted on our events calendar.

Library Cleaning: The GC has enhanced its cleaning protocols, including in the library. Cleaning teams are attending to high-touch surfaces and bathrooms more frequently, and there is signage with recommended handwashing techniques.

We will post updates as we have them.
