SHARES Access to Research Libraries

Yes, even the library at Trinity College in Dublin! (Photo by Tony Webster via flickr, CC2.0)

The Graduate Center Library brings expanded access to university and museum libraries around the region and around the world this summer research season: We are now an OCLC SHARES consortium member. SHARES membership allows entry and on-site use of resources at libraries in New York City and across the country—indeed, across the world—though not borrowing.

A second benefit of SHARES membership for the GC community is lower-cost interlibrary loans from SHARES member libraries. Savings on interlibrary loans alone will cover the institutional cost of SHARES membership.

Your current GC photo ID is valid to enter these SHARES member libraries.

CUNY doctoral faculty and retirees may obtain GC photo IDs with a request from their program Executive Officers to the GC Provost’s Office.

Columbia University and New York University exclude Fordham and Graduate Center members from their libraries following SHARES governance that allows exclusion of members from institutions within a 25-mile radius.

Any SHARES member may enter the Graduate Center Library with current photo ID from their institutions. We hope that the Graduate Center’s welcome to Columbia and NYU will one day open those library doors to all NYC SHARES members.

As always, GC PhD students and faculty are invited to apply through MaRLI for year-long borrowing from NYU and Columbia University Libraries.

Do call ahead to SHARES institutions to announce your visit and to arrange for staff to meet you as may be necessary.  Questions? library@gc.cuny.edu
