As announced by IT, student email addresses are moving from @gc.cuny.edu to @gradcenter.cuny.edu. Once the migration is complete on June 1, 2015, your old account will be deleted and all the email messages and contacts in the account will be deleted along with it.

What should you do?

If you don’t want to save any email or contacts from your old @gc.cuny.edu account, you don’t have to do anything. All the information in the account will be deleted on June 1, 2015.

If you want to save email or contacts from your old @gc.cuny.edu account, you have until June 1, 2015 to do it.  You can either self-archive your messages or transfer them to your new @gradcenter.cuny.edu account in the Office 365 student email system or to another email account such as Gmail.

Self-Archiving

To self-archive and store your email correspondence privately, you must copy it to a personally-purchased drive or cloud storage, delete it from CUNY drives, and empty the trash. You may convert your email to a different file format to allow it to be deciphered by software other than Microsoft Outlook that uses a .pst file extension.  Search online to find free or paid software to convert files from .pst to the format you need.

Transferring to @gradcenter.cuny.edu

To transfer email from your old @gc.cuny.edu to your new @gradcenter.cuny.edu account, follow these step-by-step directions from the GC IT Department: How-To-Transfer-all-Email-from-GC-Email-Account-to-new-Gradcenter-Email-Account.

To transfer contacts from your old @gc.cuny.edu account to your new @gradcenter.cuny.edu account, follow these recommendations from Microsoft for Importing Contacts via Outlook Web.

Another option for transferring email and contacts is to use the IT Department’s step-by-step instructions to Use-a-Desktop-Version-of-Outlook-to-Move-Information-between-Email-Accounts.

Transferring to Gmail

To transfer your old @gc.cuny.edu email and contacts to a Gmail account, follow these instructions from Gmail: Import email and contacts.

To Sum Up

When the GC student email migration is complete on June 1, 2015 your old account and everything it contains will be deleted. If you don’t want to save your email and contacts from your old @gc.cuny.edu account, you don’t have to do anything. But if you want to save email and contacts from your old account or self-archive your email messages, you must transfer them by June 1, 2015.
