Gioia Stevens Joins the Mina Rees Library

Gioia StevensThe Mina Rees Library welcomes Gioia Stevens who was just appointed to the library faculty at the Instructor level. Ms. Stevens earned her M.L.I.S. with Archival Certificate from Pratt Institute in 2008. She graduated with a B.A. from Brown University in 1987.

Gioia has high-level cataloging experience garnered part time at the CUNY Graduate Center Library and in the Fales Library, Institute of Fine Arts, and Ehrman Medical Library of New York University Libraries, and at the Gimbel Library for Art, Architecture, & Design at the New School.  She has cataloged at Columbia University Libraries, the Brooklyn Historical Society, and the Brooklyn Public Library as well. She has worked with a robust mix of print and electronic materials, and she has a significant background in cataloging special archival collections.

Gioia has excellent knowledge of French plus working knowledge of Italian and Latin. Her language expertise will assist in the library’s expanding collaboration with New York Public Library collection building. Gioia promises to enrich our collective understandings of metadata and taxonomic structures crucial to building shareable, searchable archives and data sets.

Prior to her library work, Gioia was Senior Acquisitions Editor at Oxford University Press where she directed the history textbook publishing program, supervised production, negotiated author contracts, and commissioned new works. Prior to that she was acquisitions editor at Columbia University Press for books in anthropology, sociology, and psychology. Her background in knowledge production and distribution will allow her to contribute meaningfully to conversations underway at the Graduate Center about scholarly communication, organization, access, and impact.
